THE WHY

Tax reports have major usability issues, forcing users to spend 2-10 days manually calculating taxes due to missing data and a lack of clear data presentation. This leads to inefficiency, frustration, errors, and reduced trust in Shopify, increasing merchant churn.

THE WORK & OUTCOMES

After conducting research and unpacking the target audience, I collaborated with my cross-functional team on two sets of iterative improvements to the reports for quick value and impact. The first set added 23 missing data points and introduced powerful filters, allowing merchants to easily manipulate the data. The second release featured a report with optimized summaries by jurisdiction, flexible enough to include custom visualizations that match 46 different U.S. state return forms for easy copy-and-paste.

In the two full days following the release, the new summary report was exported 1,100 times, with 72% of merchants opting for the new version.

THE WHY

Despite having complete tax reports, merchants struggle with filing sales tax due to unclear processes, confusing government websites, and inaccurate third-party solutions. This leads to time-consuming tasks, costly errors, and reliance on support. Merchants want Shopify to automate tax filing so they can focus on growing their business.

THE WORK & OUTCOMES

Collaborating with cross-functional teams, tax experts, third-party partners, and the Finance team, I worked on the end-to-end process of addressing the complex and ambiguous challenge of sales tax in the US. The project was divided into four phases over nine months, guided by a clear vision every step of the way, ultimately achieving the goal of creating an experience that was simple, clear, and delightful.

Three months in, we’ve reached 30,000+ scheduled filings for the year, hitting 20% above target!

Hootsuite + Amplify Integration

Desktop & mobile app

THE WHY

Amplify is a product acquired by Hootsuite that helps organizations promote brand advocacy and social selling. While the tool enables simple content sharing and publishing, it could provide a more powerful and complete experience if integrated with Hootsuite, better aligning with users' top social tasks and building their trust. Additionally, Amplify had a disjointed desktop and mobile experience, and its mobile version was built on a deprecated app framework.

THE WORK & OUTCOMES

The work was done in collaboration with two different teams—one focused on desktop and the other on mobile. Both integrations brought impactful optimizations to content creation, the publishing workflow, the sharing experience, and content browsing. The result was a clearer, more frictionless, and simplified solution—not to mention a cohesive and seamless experience across the two platforms—that significantly increased user engagement.

Mogo Loans

MogoLiquid Installment Loans were initially designed as a short-term product with a simple, one-page application, leading to missing information and user friction. Now a long-term product and the sole loan offering, I needed to streamline the application to improve user experience, reduce friction, and increase the number of loan applications.

As the lead designer, I delivered the end-to-end mobile and desktop experience, enabling merchants to apply for loans in minutes, get funded in 6 days, and access a revamped dashboard to track payments, balance, and make extra payments.

The mobile adoption increased by 15% since the new application was launched (~1 month).
